From the day the pool is built debris and water fill up the expansion joint around the pool. When this happens water collects under the coping and behind the pool wall that can freeze causing the coping and tile to come loose.  The best way to prevent damage to the pool or ever having to clean out that nasty expansion joint again is with a self leveling caulk.  The caulk comes in a variety of colors and is done weather permitting during the warm summer months to assure it sets properly.
